As toddlers, we first learn to walk, one step at a time. Sometimes we succeed in stepping, while other times we succeed in wobbling, stumbling or tumbling. However, eventually we master the skill of walking, and commence a lifetime of moving forward. Likewise, article writing can seem challenging at first. However, by following certain steps, we can learn to master it:

1. Make your writing alive and active. One way to achieve this goal is by using concrete examples to show abstract ideas. Also, focus on using verbs more frequently than adjectives, to make your writing alive. Primarily use verbs that show action, rather than “state of being” verbs (i.e. is, was, be).

2. Avoid using clichés. An example of a cliché is, “Think outside the box.” In the past, these sayings had literal meanings, but today they are frequently overused. It is better to expound on the cliché, to create a fresher illustration.

3. Start the article with a story. This could be either a true or fictitious story. The story does not have to be directly related to the content per se. However, the story should be interesting, and somewhat related to the broad context of the article.

4. Use transitional phrases. Writing is like giving directions to a particular place, to a person. As the writer, you know how to go from point A to point B. The reader is encountering the information you already know, for the first time. However, transitions can be used to minimize the writer’s uncertainty. Transitions can be used for various purposes, such as to contrast, to give examples, or to show a cause and effect.

5. Use short words and sentences. English’s words of Anglo-Saxon origin tend to be short and more concrete. These are typically the best to use. Also, short sentences will allow you to focus your thoughts. According to research, your average sentence length should be roughly 14 words.
