In their first few years of writing, many writers are hobbyists. They enjoy playing with words, and expressing themselves. Many writers stay at this level. Their writing is satisfying, but they have no desire to make money at it.
When you decide you want to make money from writing however, selling is always just as important as writing. From my own experience, and from working with my students, I find that many writers find that selling is a real challenge, because they need to change their mindset.

First, you have to know what those goals are. Second, you need a plan. (Cue theme song from “Rocky.”) Whether you write full-time, part-time or when time permits, you need a business plan. Your business plan should include an Executive Summary. The goals you hope to achieve this year should comprise your executive summary. Let’s say yours looks like this:
Executive Summary: A) Complete novel. B) Sell ten articles to magazines. C) Attend one writers’ conference.
Next comes your Plan of Action. How do you plan to achieve these goals? I’ll prepare three model plans of action. POA1 is for those who write full-time. POA2 is for those who write part-time. POA3 is for those who write when time permits.

Recently USA Today and ABC News did a weeklong series of stories on family members as caretakers of their elderly relatives. It hit on many levels. It involved a huge chunk of the population: baby boomers. It involved commonality: more and more people are taking on the caretaker role. And of course it involved money: the costs both in time and dollars being expended, they reported, was a good chunk of change. I immediately contacted one of my Inner Circle Workshop students, who is working on a book about the care of Alzheimer’s patients: now is the perfect time for her to send out press releases to get attention for her upcoming book. I know other authors with similar subject matter would do the same–if they were on top of their game.

Outsourcing to freelancers around the globe is truly “the name of the game” in today’s online world. However, there is not much control on the quality classification for freelancers on various portals servicing these hard-working, diligent, and dedicated individuals. Sure, there is a rating system on websites like GAF, RAC, GAC, Elance, Scriptlance, etc but some of the ratings appear a trifle “made up” or as they sometimes say in the sport’s world - “fixed”! This interpretation could be specific only in a few cases nevertheless it does exist and several freelancers fall victim to an outsourcing “bias” that can be devastating for the growth of a healthy concept.
