There are two types of stress. The first type is acute stress. That’s the kind where your body senses danger and adapts to the threat by making physical changes which enable you to quickly get out of harms way. This occurs because your body secretes chemicals and stress hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol. These chemicals are secreted in response to your thoughts and cause your body to prepare for “fight or flight.” For example, let’s say you are crossing the street and you notice a car quickly approaching. You see the car which causes you to feel fear and anxiety. Your body then adapts to the stress by secreting chemicals and hormones which send messages to your heart, lungs and organs in order to prepare them to handle your crisis. Your heart rate increases, blood flow is diverted to muscles allowing for quick movement, your pupils dilate and more oxygen flows through your lungs for an extra burst of energy. These changes allow you to react quickly, enabling you to jump onto the curb to safety. Within a short period of time your body calms down and things return to normal. This protective mechanism is crucial to your safety and is designed to protect you against danger.

We all make mistakes and I have no problem apologizing to other people if I should ever let them down. But, a few years ago I decided that there was one person that I was going to stop asking forgiveness of—myself.

Mainly I found myself making excuses for not hitting the goals that I had set for myself. Usually I was more disappointed in the lack of effort than the end result. And, although I always had an excuse—I almost never believed them.

There is some controversy as to when the best time to stretch is. Some people believe that it is good to stretch before a run and after the warm up. Others prefer to stretch after the run and skip their pre-run stretch. Some stretch both times. In a lot of ways, the right time to stretch will depend on your body.

One of my favorite parts of the game of Golf is the short shot around the green. These can make or break your scoring and need just as much practice as your drives, long irons and putts. Let’s imagine the scenario that you have had a sweet drive which whistle-sailed from the tee and landed square in the middle of the fairway. You then extract a mid-range iron from your bag and drop the ball just short of the green. Upon reaching the ball you realize that it’s one of those hairy short shots that can be very hard to decide which route to take. You have landed a few inches from the edge of the green in grass that is a little too long to allow the use of a putter. It’s time to make a crucial decision.

Using a treadmill has great health benefits. But, with so many on the market it’s hard to know what the best treadmill to buy is. The secret finding the best one is to ask your self some questions and to give back some honest answers.

First, decide on how much you want to spend and stick to it. Of course, you should spend as much as you can afford, but don’t be persuaded to buy a treadmill outside of your price bracket. Besides, buying one in a higher price bracket may not get you the model that is right for you; a cheaper machine may be more suitable for your fitness requirements.
