Corporations know the power of packaging a product so the brand has appeal to the consumer. Often in business the package is the person. What does your personal brand look like? What message does your image send?

Often I talk about public relations as being relationships with your public. I believe building personal relationships is critical to business success. Most people want to do business with people that they like. One way of building relationships is through your personal branding, differentiating yourself from your competitors by being you, and allowing that uniqueness to shine.

After my last article and my mention of goal setting I started to think about my own goals for the quickly approaching 2007 New Year. I have some goals I revise and reuse every year. Writing down my goals clarifies what I want to accomplish, as stated by author Arnold Patent, “What you focus on expands”. I apply this belief to every area of my life and it always rings true. When you focus on positive, forward thinking thoughts you don’t have time to dwell on past mistakes, negative thoughts or outside distractions. It keeps you thinking, even subconsciously, on how to achieve your objectives.

When you speak, you represent a brand, the brand of you. How you talk, walk, and look reflect upon that brand. What does your body language say about you? Does it say you’re trustworthy, confident, and competent, or just the opposite? While there are thousands of books and articles devoted to body language, how many have you read lately? Sometimes too much information is a bad thing.

Just try to follow this type of habits like: -

• Nothing fancy required, just a firm handshake with two or three shakes usually does the trick. Avoid squeezing like a vice. The key is to maintain eye contact while shaking hands. Finally, a warm smile adds just the right touch.
