First, you have to know what those goals are. Second, you need a plan. (Cue theme song from “Rocky.”) Whether you write full-time, part-time or when time permits, you need a business plan. Your business plan should include an Executive Summary. The goals you hope to achieve this year should comprise your executive summary. Let’s say yours looks like this:

Executive Summary: A) Complete novel. B) Sell ten articles to magazines. C) Attend one writers’ conference.

Next comes your Plan of Action. How do you plan to achieve these goals? I’ll prepare three model plans of action. POA1 is for those who write full-time. POA2 is for those who write part-time. POA3 is for those who write when time permits.

Once upon a time, people went to bookstores when they wanted to buy a book. Or at least, that was the theory. Actually, non-bookstore channels have been a big part of book sales for decades—at least since authors like Joe Karbo (”The Lazy Man’s Way to Riches”) back in the 1960s.

For my own books, whether they were self-published, done with a small commercial house, or by a New York conglomerate, I’ve found that selling direct is more secure, more financially rewarding, and far less hassle than sweating out the returns game with the bookstore channel.

Writing and submitting articles has been an increasingly popular way to market products and websites. It can be a very effective way to create inbound links to your websites, but only if it is done the correct way!

It is a low cost - but most likely a very time consuming work to write and submit articles to maybe hundreds of article directories and eZine lists. To simplify your job, you may use one of the free or paid article marketing submission tools.

Article marketing and internet marketing is a great way to make a living. It’s a real blessing to get up every morning, make the long 30 foot commute to my office, and do it all with excitement.

But it was not always this way.

It’s really easy to get distracted on the Internet. There is another “must have new product bus” coming by every few minutes. Many people find it difficult to know what area to focus on and then what to do once you decide.
