Eventually, the dog will avoid going near the door. A similar variant involves having someone walk through the door and teaching the dog not to jump on the person by stating “stop!” every time it jumps. Yes, this works wonders as well.
Another way of training the dog involves creating a safe word that the dog understands as permission to walk out the door. Using the word “leave” as an example, you could deny a dog permission to go out a door until the word “leave” is stated. In time, the dog will not exit a door until it hears those magic words. This will become a great help if a door opens when you are not around to block the dogs exit.
As you can see, a little dog house training goes a long way when it comes to improving doorway etiquette. It can make your comings and goings much less stressful for both you and your dog.
