FDA linked at least part of the problem to “MELAMINE.” which is a white, crystalline, slightly water-soluble solid, C3N3(NH2)3, used mainly in organic synthesis and in the production of resins. Cyanuric Acid was another possible chemical. Other things that may have caused problems are heavy metals, lead, fungi, and even rat poison.
