Including an interview in your podcast is one way to make it more interesting, however, many podcasters will damage the reputation of their guest expert - and the effectiveness of their podcast - simply because they make common interview mistakes.

In this tip, you’ll learn why it’s important not to conduct podcast interviews over a cell phone and what you should do instead.

Never conduct an interview on a cell phone. Reasons?

  • Makes post-production a pain. The person on the cell phone will sound 10,000 db softer than the person who used a land line. The person who has to level the sounds will have bleeding eardrums by the end. And if it were recorded in mono (a single track) increase editing time by 300 hours.
  • The call drops. For no and many reason. Lost signal, poor reception, Cylon attacks in the 5th dimension. And it’s such a pain to try and pick up where you left off.
  • It’s difficult to hear your guest. You’ll have to interrupt your guest a dozen times to ask him or her to speak up. No matter how much you turn up the volume on your earpiece, chances are, you will have difficulty hearing what your guest is saying.
  • Encourages poor telephone etiquette. Such as:
  • “Speak up.”
  • “Huh?”
  • “What was that again?”
  • “Repeat that.”
  • “I’m sorry, you chipped out there. Can you say that last bit again?”

If you call your guest and he or she is on their cell phone, ask your guest if you can them back immediately on their landline. If your guest can’t because he or she is traveling, reschedule the interview for a time when they will be close to a landline.
