The one thing that separates the amateurs from the professionals is the ability to sell not just your products and services but yourself!

In whatever your field, professionals are looked up to. They are leaders and are able to do things with ease. Where others are left to follow and ask questions, the professionals set the standard and make the decisions. Are you a professional?

Being a “professional” is so much more than getting a college degree, or having a specific title. It’s having an ability to perform. It’s the knowing how to do things and the relentless drive to get them done. Professionals know more about what they do than everyone else around them, and they constantly apply themselves to the task.

Professionalism is demonstrated by excellent performance and a continuous effort to learn, practice and improve.

In order to become more professional, do the following:

1. Study your product, your market, and your competition. Get your own information so that you’ve got first hand experience.

2. Set some goals. List some daily tasks and rate them in order of how they influence your sales performance. Get your priorities straight and take action doing the “money making” tasks. The other stuff just seems to do itself.

3. Adopt the credo: “If it’s worth doing it’s worth doing well”. You’ll earn respect from your business partners and you’ll have less to follow up later.

4. Become a Professional Problem Solver. Solving problems is the key to success in any field, and solving other people’s problems is the key to selling.

There’s no doubt in my mind that today’s buyers are more educated and sceptical than ever before. This is why professionalism is the key to success. Building relationships and discovering the individual in every single client is the only way to break down this barrier.

A Sales Professional always demonstrates excellence. There is no substitute for competence.
