Hydrogen Electrolysis is the decomposition of water (H2O) into oxygen (O2) and hydrogen gas (H2) due to an electric current being passed through the water. This process uses a device called a hydrogen generator and creates a gas call HHO, also referred to as “Browns Gas”.

An electrical source ( such as the Battery in an automobile) is connected to two electrodes, (typically made from some corrosion resistant metal such as stainless steel, or nickel alloy) which are placed in a small container of water. Hydrogen bubbles will be created at the cathode (the negatively charged electrode, where electrons are pumped into the water), and oxygen will appear at the anode (the positively charged electrode). The amount of hydrogen gas or HHO generated is twice the amount of oxygen, (hence HHO) and both are proportional to the total electrical charge that was sent through the water.

Electrolysis of pure distilled water is pretty slow. It can be sped up dramatically by adding an electrolyte (such as a salt, an acid or a base). Baking soda is a base and can be added to speed up the production of hydrogen to a quantity that is usable for automobile engines. Provided the correct modifications are made to vehicle, better gas mileage has been reported by many people. I know a guy who swears his full size Bronco went from 11 to 17 mpg by installing one of these Hydrogen generators.

Of course there are also people who say its a Scam.

Several companies are offering instruction books explaining hydrogen electrolysis and hydrogen generators that install under the hood and are made from inexpensive household type stuff. Its easy to say gas saving devices are a scam when gas is affordable but with gas prices at crazy levels, more people are willing to try things.
